PRT losing strategies!!

When i logged in today i got shocked. Yesterday i had worked all day and created two new strategies. Both programs i ran many, many times during the day, changed many times and had several versions saved.

Today both strategies are gone!!! Of all the versions i saved there was only one file (an early version of one of the strategies) left. All others gone. Luckily i was so happy with both strategies that i set them live already last night and these versions were still running. Now i copy/paste both running strategies and saved them again on the server.

So finally there was no big damage done. I lost some working versions of the strategy but could save the running versions which were my last versions of the files but hadn’t I set the running all would have been gone without trace.

I already wrote to PRT because I’m really furious about this happening. There are many problems with PRT and I try to be understanding that it is under constant development but this error is not acceptable!

So I can only recommend everybody to make frequent backups of your work (exporting the files from the PRT-server so you have the files yourself).

I noticed now that an indicator i programmed yesterday also vanished. This I had to code new now. So basically everything i did yesterday wasn’t saved. The only thing that survived was the strategies that I put live (thank god).

I now make backups of everything I have on the PRT-server!

…and it happened again! Luckily i backed up my files. Never logout without exporting your files!

So just to be clear, when you say above … I had several versions saved  … you went file / save to template or you went  File / Exit and clicked save to template on the Quit window?

I ask above as there is no way to save a Strategy (?) other than the above illogical way (in my opinion). I say illogical because once we have named a Strategy and seen it listed along with loads of others then our brains are reading this as saved (just like with files on our PC) … but oh NO it is not saved!

I hit CTRL+S several times a day to avoid loosing my work. You should get this automatism while developing. Some people like to develop outside the platform IDE also: notepad++, Atom, etc..

Especially when testing different approaches to solve single problems with the code there is not really a better way for versioning than doing it outside PRT.

Think of it as your execution plattform and not as a development tool.

I had saved my work definitely several times during the day. There were 2-3 versions of the strategy saved on the PRT server and also one indicator. Then I was logged out and when i logged in again the files were simply gone. And also the indicator. It vanished from the chart where i was using it and the file was also gone.

And later the day It happened a second time. Again I had worked on one strategy and come up with a new version (new filename also). I put it live. When i logged in next time the strategy was still running live but the file was gone. So again copy/paste…

It never happened to me before like it did yesterday and believe me I am saving. I do this like you described Grahal. I save the template under the menu file. But my work was gone anyway!

However after this experience I export all my work every day from now on. I want the files on my HDD!

Never heard of this problem before. Please send a debug console to prorealtime through the platform tool.

I did so. I will share when i receive a reply.

I’ve had the opposite now! Exported loads of Bots to my PC yesterday, saved using ctrl + s, also saved when exited. I deleted all the exported Bots from the PRT List of Bots, this only left me with 3 or 4

Tried to import one of Bots I exported yesterday and I got the message (not exact words) … Strategy is already shown in your list of bots, cancel, overwrite or rename.

I only have 4 Bots remaining in my list after export yesterday so there is no chance of me not seeing the one I wanted to import. So it seems that the PRT Server show my exported Bots as not deleted and yet the Bots don’t show on my List on my screen … hope that makes sense??

Hey Despair, me and you should work for PRT as Testers as we seem to be the only ones who get all these weird things happening!!?? 🙂

I had something similar. When I logged in to discover that my one strategy was gone another old strategy that I had deleted some time ago suddenly popped up gain under “not running strategies”.

This saving issue is really, really bad. PRT should make it a priority to fix it. Other additions would be nice to have but if one can’t save his work in a reliable way all is worthless anyway.

Also still no comment from PRT on my complains though I sent them 2 days (or was it even 3?) ago.

Hi Nicolas – are you saying you have never lost any work/edits in PRT…?

Has PRT ever auto-exited on you when you were away from your computer or do you ALWAYS manually exit and save? (you’ve never once been caught out?)

There have been quite a few other posts ->

    https://community.ig.com/t5/Web-platform-and-Apps/ProRealTime-not-saving-my-code-and-other-PRT-issues/m-p/10018#M341

To be fair it seems to be mostly me GraHal and Despair who are highlighting it but others are chipping in that they have the problem but just put up with it/accept it/consider it to be correct behaviour etc.

I too am also waiting to hear back from IG/IT Finance as have a support case on with them about this at the moment

I must admit I’ve been caught 2 or 3 times, but it was long time ago. I’m doing coding jobs every day for customers, and I save my works many, many times per our (think of CTRL+S as a second nature). I don’t know why but it’s been a long time since I seen this warning window about the 12 hours maintenance and I often work more than 12 hours a day, but I sometimes restart the platform because of weird graphic problem due to my GC. I know this is the correct behavior of the platform (exiting without saving), it is not a bug, but just like you I think it needs to be modified to avoid hours of codes wiped away!

I’ll try to get answers about this with my next call to IT finance.

Hi Nicolas – I save like crazy too – every time I make the smallest of edit but as far as I have experienced all that saving is doing nothing UNTIL you manually QUIT and SAVE PRT and then the saves are actually properly committed

If you save save save but then allow PRT to auto-exit unattended nothing is saved…

That does not make sense to me/what is the ‘save’ actually saving?

(even though I am crazy about saving there are times after an hour or two I might make a slight edit to code or add/remove an instrument from a watchlist and am ‘in the middle of trading’ and don’t want to manually QUIT/SAVE at that time then forget about it and few hours later I leave my computer and come back to PRT auto-exited – reopen and voila! the latest edits have not been saved… so I still get caught out!)

Same with me Max, I am getting more disciplined saving with Ctrl+S, but if you say it does nothing? I’ll have to test this out.

But – apart from Noobs 🙂 – who wants a System that Auto-exits without saving. Maybe we should raise a poll and then PRT might listen to their customers??  Even Noobs could tick an Option button for No Save.

2nd thoughts re a Poll, not a good idea … it would give a false impression cos out of the 1000’s of users of this site it seems 95% ‘pop in and pop out’ and don’t get involved with much at all? Nicolas may correct me?
