Which indicator to separate ranging from trending market

Hello, One of the main hurdle to create succesfull mechanical systems is in my opinion the ability to detect if the market is in trend or in range. I would be interested to know what kind of indicator do you use to make this distinction? I don’t find ADX or RSI really efficient, or at least lagging too much. Thx you for your input!
