Trade Analysis

Hello all, so i got 3 questions:

    1. Are anyone using excel or some other software for data/trade analysis?

    2. If not, would you be willing to pay for a software that could?

    3. What would you want in this software?

Backstory to questions: I got a friend who is a software programmer, and he is currently working on a side-project for me. A software where i can export all trades (backtest/real results) into excel files, from PRT, and he can use that excel file to make huge analytical presentable data. For example he can show a “Change in equity” in weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly results from each backtest. You can use this to measure correlation between systems and other things, to put together the best possible portfolio based on your backtests.

The possibilities tho are pretty much endless. You can calculate sharpe and much more statistics on all algorithms + portfolio of algorithms, in a matter of seconds (automatic) using this software. You can see which days/months/years are most profitable for your system etc.

I think the biggest issue using only excel, unless your good, is to process the data using correct dates. For example you cant really run a correlation between system A and system B unless you look at the dates of the trades, which can be very tricky to do in excel (in my experience at least)

A much more detailed report for strategy analysis is planned by PRT. I haven’t seen the draft yet, but I know it will be very detailed. By the way, the project you are describing is awesome and would be very helpful for members. But the major problem is how to export more than 100 rows of orders from the backtests outside the platform?

I can extract up to 1000 trades to excel using just copy paste from the detailed report. Strategies that have above that number of trades, i just cut the backtest in 2 or 3 or 4 however many cuts u need to you extract 1000~ trades every time.

1000 trades to excel using just copy paste from the detailed report

I think Nicolas meant to say 1000.

Has it now changed to copy and paste … or do you mean drag and drop?

correlation between system A and system B unless you look at the dates of the trades, which can be very tricky to do in excel

Excel Pivot Tables / Charts are good / useful for manipulation of dates / times.

Also simple to use after you get your head around Pivots etc.

oh yes, I meant 1000 not 100! 😳 Depending of the strategy, it could be a problem to divide the backtest into separated periods though.. I don’t know why there is this limitation of rows exported.

It is 100 in the optimisation window report which is the one that I always find rather limiting and time consuming.

Yea both the 100 limit in optimization that Vonasi is talking about is crazy… The 1000 is very annoying as well but possible to work around using dates. Like show backtest from 2006 -> 2012, copy paste that (yes, mark the trade at top, copy it (ctr + C) and paste it in excel, and u get up to 1000 trades, then just change backtest dates from 2012 -> 2019 and copy paste the last trades.

The main problem (at least that i was/am facing) is that Dates when you copy paste it in excel, might look different (for some reason) and its a total bitch having to manualy edit all the dates to the same format. The program my friend is working on lets you just copy paste it and the software reades each trade and date and places it in the correct order. Its very nice and helpful.

At the moment the software has the ability to read data (input) and give me a very nice formatet data (output)  that can be used for pivot tables in excel. In the future this will be way better tho, and no excel will be needed.

Did you see the info on the Link below @jebus89 … seems you can download historical prices from IG Markets datafeed. It uses a free Excel spreadsheet from IG markets website?
