Out of memory?

I had problems with PRT being really slow the last days and now today i got several times a warning that PRT is running low on memory. I already wrote to PRT-support (hope they answer this time) and on the right hand side when writing the mail to PRT you get a little system info. There was the line saying:

Max Memory: 4096 Mio (detected 7980 Mio)

This sounds for me like PRT only uses 4GB of the 8GB i have installed. Anyboday experienced similar problems before?

Yes I used to get it often when I backtested a lot over 100,000 bars. It’s only now you’re asking I realised I don’t get it any more.

Are you on a 32 bit machine or 64 bit?

I have windows 7 64-bit on this PC but i have both firefox and java in 32-bit. I tried several times to install java 64bit but i always get an errorcode (i think it was 1603) during installation.

Are there somewhere instructions how one sets up a PC most favorable for PRT? WOuld be usefull…

Grahal: What does it say for you under Max Memory in PRT? Does it show more than 4GB?

Despair, see attached re max RAM.

Also did you read my Topic re the bits on Firefox 32 bit / 64 bit?

Also Pollux on below is saying he’s having similar issues since about Tuesday this week.

When I used to get the ‘out of memory’ message, I used to Exit PRT (remember to save as you exit) then Open PRT again then it was okay again for a long period, but only for a shorter period if I continued doing 100,000 bar backtests.

But the screen you attached shows also only 4GB. I will try to login with my imac that has 24GB and is all 64bit…

This was interesting. For my iMac it says:

Max Memory: 5461 Mio (detected: 24576 Mio)

So the interesting part is it uses more than 4GB (good) but why isn’t it taking more when there is so much.

And yes, i’m doing heavy backtests.

Depsair did you get more information on the Memory/Ram.

On some of my backtests with loops PRT fails but with simple systems it’s okay. I’ve been considering to add more Ram but I’m doubtful if it will help. Did you manage to get the Mac to use more Ram?

    1. When I investigated this a while back only Firefox Developer edition was 64bit. Which browser are you using?
    2. Did you try to load via Java and set it to 8GB instead of the desktop applet?
    3. Have you got dual boot Bootcamp with Win on Mac and have you tried through that?

I now abandoned my PC and work on my iMAC. There PRT is utilizing more RAM (most i have seen so far was that PRT allocated 9GB of my 24GB, on my PC it never allocated more than 4GB though 8GB were installed).

On my Mac i use safari as browser and I can say so much. The speed of the backtests is not really increasing BUT the speed of the platform is increased a lot with more RAM. To be more precise, on my PC the speed of the whole PRT platform (opening menus or whatever) went into slow motion when i started 2-3 backtests with more than 100K bars simultaneously. It was hardly operational. Now with my mac i can run many more tests parallel before the speed is getting affected. Yesterday for example i ran 6 WFA all on 100+K bars simultaneously. This was obviously already heavy for my mac because the platform was noticeable slower. Anyway still with 6 running tests one could work. On my PC i would have had slower speed with just 2 tests running.

So the answer is, adding more RAM makes the platform running smoother and allows you to run more tests at a time. The speed of the tests itself seems no to be affected so much.
