Just thought I’d introduce myself. I’ve been trading for many years and ended up using it-finance charting package through pro real time. Many excellent features, not least the pro real time automatic trend lines. I was drawn here by the lure of automated trading of course. The pro back test feature is rather addictive. It seems that its quite easy to write a simple strategy that makes a lot of profit. Does this actually work in the real world?

    cheers,

    Dan

    Welcome!

It might seem like it is quite easy to write a strategy that historically has MADE a lot of profit. When you progress you will learn to identify which factors actually makes a system reliable enough to run live. There are people who consistently make money, people who consistently lose money and everything in between. Since those who provide the CFDs and earn money from spreads and commisions, as well as institutions, earn the majority of profits, the majority of amateur traders will be losers in the long run. So it is not the case that it is easy to write a simple profitable strategy. I have written something like 100 systems, but I only trust three of them to be actually used. They have done well, but at any point in time, they may stop to be profitable. If you learn from mistakes and do everything right (risk managment, system portfolio management, backtesting approach), you may still lose money, but chances are greatly improved that you will profit.

Welcome dantav, thanks for your presentation.
Once again, Wing perfectly summarized what automatic trading is and what can be expected. I have nothing more to say. If you’re not afraid of losing a little money and you’re willing to work tremendously, then anything is possible. Of course, learning can be very long, there is so much to understand and to discover in the world of quantitative analysis.

    Hi Dan

Also maybe your simple strategy that makes a lot of profit may be due to the ‘zero bar issue’ (?) … check it out via this Site Search. I know when I first encountered it (but was ignorant of it) I thought … I’m gonna make it big time, I’ve arrived, I’m rich, rich rich!!! hahaha

    Cheers

PS I also first found PRT via a search / link re Automatic Trend Lines 🙂
