Is it possible to change a normal stop loss to a guaranteed or a trailing stop loss after the position is opened?

i read this but never tried it (IG)

” If you’re using one of our mobile apps, you can also attach guaranteed stops to trades that are in progress, or remove them from open positions.”

    Hello Mamsoor,

it probably depends your country if you can do that. In germany today you can only open guaranteed positions. Before this change came into effect sometimes the stop could be changed into a guaranteed one after the initial opening. I am saying sometimes, because even though IG once sent a newsletter that this should be a standard option. It didn’t always work…

I could not find a system why sometimes it would work and why sometimes not. The option would sometimes be available “on and of” during a single trade. Maybe volatility and actual trading hours of the underlying could help explain, but I think IG will reserve the right to do whatever they want.

As you can see from Eric’s reply,  reasoning is not exactly helpfull here since using the mobile app should not be the reason when a stop can be changed into a guarateed one. Which brings us to the next problem, the many outdated bits of information on the IG website. While I know first hand that it can be a nightmare to keep a big and ever changing public database online, many infos there are simply staying outdated.

I suggest you contact customer service in your country to get a written statement that you can refer to, in case of any surprises with this otherwise nice feature.

Eric is right. You can change the stop type on mobile app but not on desktop.
