Hi! As we walk into 2026, I think it could be time to reflect on the past trading year, and see what experiences and mistakes we can learn from last year. Would love to hear your thoughts, and not only your chart, both is encouraged, but of course feel free to mask out actual numbers.

My year was tough, after a fantastic beginner year 2024 where the account grew 54%, this year turned out to be +-0 after fee’s. Here is some mistakes I did during the year.

    1. Code Mistake
During the spring I made a code mistake in one of my algos. That made the bot take an 800€ loss instead of a 100€ loss. With my small account size, that hurts! I MUST control and verify my algos before I start them live.

    2. Dont use others algorithms
Well, its always nice to find inspiration from other strategies, especially from ProRealCode! But by this I mean bot sellers algorithms. I got hold of “the best” algo from one of the big algo providers, for free, after a webinarium. I started it live because I thought this must be good! After 6 months it ended up with 500€ loss. That doesnt nessecary mean it is a bad algorithm. However, I find it far easier to have conviction, and endure drawdowns, in your own algorithms that you know HOW they work, rather than algos with hidden code that might be very overfitted.

    3. Overnight fee’s
With just some simple time exits, I would have saved about 500€ in overnight fee’s. I was too lazy or too ignorant to do that before this year.

    4. Only use your most robust strategies
During the year I needed to turn off some of my own algorithms. I guess this is part of the game, but I think my mindset was a bit wrong. I really wanted different algos on different timeframes to diversify my portfolio. But in the end, if the algo is not good enough, and sometimes even losing money, than you should not use it to force diversification.

That is some of the lessons learned I take with me in to 2026. I would love to hear yours!

…there is no year which is not tough 😀

also I would even say, a year which is not “tough” is potentally kind of bad year. not in terms of profitability. but it might give one false confidence, which then leads to crazy activities. which then – in the end – leads possibly to the situation where one is “trading” 150 strategies on demo account.

my year was ok, accumulated +26% of profits with -18% max drawdown. it was worse than year before where I collected much more % profit and significantly less drawdown, the ratio profit/dd was much stronger, but anyway, that is different every year. 2025 had sure the potential for better result, but after exceeding 15% threshold for drawdown in early spring I was reducing size of few strategies / cutting them by almost half – just few days before trump removed tariffs and equities skyrocketed. I caught that huge move up with several strategies, but with some then only with approx half of usual size… was it a “mistake” to cut the size before?  maybe, but I do not regret it: I take care so much about my mental stability, not less than about finiancial side, and both are extremely important – at the same time. I am still amazed about paradox nature of trading business. one of the aspects being that one has to ignore “money” when making trading decisions (even in case one trades algos), and at exactly the same time one has to take care very much about the “money”.

one strange thing which I came accross last year was due to new strategy I developed end of the year. it has really totally different entry logic than all others which I run live or have ever developed – but after finishing the development and comparing backtest results it turned out that those results are very strongly correlated with results of another strategy which I run live since years. the correlation is so strong that I was a bit shocked. I am still “guessing” what is the potential learning behind that. not able to make any conlusion from all that still.

wishing everybody humble, vigilant mind and productive trading year 2026
