Have a new algo that goes long USD/JPY and uses a trailing stop.I started it 2 weeks ago and everything have been working fine up to yesterday.

Yesterday and today the stop is not working. Yesterday it fell 100% more than the stop distans before I had to manually sell it, and today again 2 times it traded under stop and the second time it was almost 20 min under stop without it being triggered. Anyone have any idea why this is happening and what to do for it not to happen in the future?

Did you tick the ‘adjust stops’ box when you started your Algo and was there a high volatility when the stops did not trigger (it looks high volatility from your screernshot)?

If Yes to above, then that is how ‘adjust stops’ is supposed to work, unless anybody wishes to disagree?

    PS

Ah I just re-read your post and noticed that you are talking about ‘trailing stops’ … so now we have an interestng question … does the ‘adjust stops’ box (tick when we start Algo) refer to fixed stops only or are trailing stops adjusted also during high volatility??

Yes volatility have been higher than normal but nothing extreme, it have now been more then 2h under stop level without being triggerd. Still holding the position to see what will happen.

    Readjust stops is enabled

You may have posted the first evidence I can recall of ‘adjust stops’ working correctly.

I am not saying it does not work incorrectly, it’s just that nobody seems ever to have anlaysed or posted evidence of stop adjustment working etc.

It has always been my understanding (but I never proved) that whatever high volatility triggered the stop to be auto-adjusted need to calm down / reduce before stop levels in the code would again be respected.  In an ideal world, price back to same level before auto-adjust was triggered, but doubt it’s as claer cut as that?

Clearly there is a degree of ‘slack for IG’ in what I say above as far as IG respecting coded stop levels after auto-adjust?

Let us know your findings Mr.Mjau.

Are you using the standard IG trailing stop, or a custom trailing stop…?

SET STOP pTRAILING 95 After watching the position abit more I can see that it also never followed up when price went up in the morning hours.

Do you also have a separate “Stop Loss” (Set Stop Loss) in your code…?

No just the “SET STOP pTRAILING 95”

I think the value (95) after the “Set Stop pTrailing” should be multiplied by the “pipsize”… (Forex)

    Set Stop pTrailing 95*pipsize

Algo been working fine up till yesterday, without having that pipsize. Do you still think it can be part of the problem, causing the trailing stop to glitch out?

No, probably not if it has already worked well…

Don’t see any further solutions than contacting IG…

JS, any reason you think or see why it isn’t as I offered… ‘adjust stops’ working during high volatility? What is your pipsize on USD/JPY Mr.Mjau? Pipsize on USD/JPY on my Platform is showing as 0.01 , so that would make Set Stop pTrailing 95*pipsize being read as Set Stop pTrailing 9500. You 100% sure Mr.Mjau the previous correct exits were a result of Set Stop pTrailing 95 ? Have you got any other exit conditions (apart from pTrailing 95) in the Strategy?

Strategy didn’t switch direction and go straight from Long to Short or Short to Long?
