    Hi,

I have just opened an account with IBKR (I have been with IG for 15 years and used PRT via that account), and I can’t figure out how to use PRT on IBKR. I cannot seem to find any option on my account. With IG it’s easy and visible. Not sure if someone can guide me in the right direction?

    Thanks

    Mike

    Hi there Mike,

    I’d say it starts here : https://www.prorealtime.com/en/ProRealTime-Complete

From there things should be straight forward. Do notice that you will need subscriptions to the data to view/trade charts in real time (But Fx is free).

    Problems ? just ask.
    Peter

PS: So you’re not supposed to ever start the IBKR (TWS) platform. It’s all within PRT itself.

Ah, thank you Peter for the prompt response. I just noticed PRT is not available for UK residents with an IBKR account! What a shame.

I wouldn’t know why that is. But point is (I think), you should have started the other way around :
    – Obtain PRT (trial version is sufficient);
    – Start viewing charts (and trade it you like, but with delayed data).
    * You will be using IBKR automatically (and won’t really notice).

Otherwise : how do you notice PRT is not available ?

    Another PS:
Assumed that you will get it working – which can only go through the help of PRT employees because your PRT account needs to be set up properly), then your next step (sort of challenge) is that you use your (already funded ?) IBKR account for the new PRT instance. This is NOT common for PRT but they will do it.

Easiest would be to dial the 0044 number available for your country. This is direct PRT (other than IG where you can’t even contact PRT directly).

I just saw this (see screenshot) when I followed the link. I did my research before signing up for IBKR, (obviously not enough!), I didn’t see anywhere that UK was not included. Only now.

    I asked …

It is slightly different than I knew :

You actually *must* have the IBKR account already. So well done. 🙂
Then at signing up with PRT, their system sees your IBKR account (you must enter the account number somewhere), and next you will be provided a link to the PRT-API. Do notice that this is more special usage (I don’t know anyone on this forum who uses the API), but is applied for several countries for people who like to use IBKR.
The API works “locally” and not on the PRT servers. You could deem this inconvenient, but I myself would like that (I have been beta tester for the PRT-API, but in the end am not allowed to use it from the Netherlands). Have a faster PC – have faster results (and nobody will bother you for performance).

So the kind of downside (if at all) : You need to have TWS always running, or better : that more lean tool (which requires restarting once per week only on Sundays), TWS requires a restart each day) There’s all sorts of guidance required for that, but I suppose this comes with the PRT link you will receive.

    I hope this helps ?

That lean tool I mentioned is the IB Gateway.
