Correct me if i’m wrong but i have 2 options if i want to use PRT right? Either download it onto my PC or use the Java based web platform?

I don’t really want to download bulky data onto my laptop so that just leaves Java. But even Google or Firefox have stopped supporting Java so is it really safe to use on a daily basis?

    Cheers

PRT is not bulky and does not install all sorts of files as well. Quite neat.

Yes there is a security risk using the Java interface as stated by FireFox.
You may use it but in an application like this where personal information and money is involved I wont use it.
It’s not your everyday hacker that can use/intercept your traffic but the ones that can is the ones that poses a danger.
Then there is always BigBrother ….

The platform is not installed on your computer, it is only a “launcher” that ease its start (no more Java messages or settings to change like in the old way).

I don’t think there is any security breach possible since everything between your browser and the PRT servers is SSL encrypted. I might be wrong but Firefox and Google are referring about problems with http protocol, not https.

I have news about your concern, from PRT:

The abandonment of Java support on Chrome and FF should not change anything: the Java mode of PRT uses the download of a file .JNLP which is launchable directly via the Windows explorer
(Browsers block the Java plugin, for all Java applets embedded in web pages, which is not the case with PRT)
In any case the launcher mode is much better as you know (more efficient, etc)

    Cheers for the help,

So just to be clear the installed launcher will also use the web based platform and only the launcher gets downloaded then?

And does the installed on pc ”launcher” use Java or not?

    Thanks

Not sure to understand. “web based platform” is PureDeal? Browsers blocking Java components only affects java applets using the java plugin in web pages. This is not the case for PRT. Basically, this change will be totally transparent for PRT users (for ex : Chrome has already removed the java plugin – it does not change anything to launch PRT)

And does the installed on pc ”launcher” use Java or not?

PRT uses java technology, yes, but it is totally transparent to you as you do not need to “install java” (from java.com website) anymore if you use the launcher : all the components necessary to run PRT are embedded in the launcher installation. So you only need to install PRT like any software, and launch PRT from your broker’s website as usual (or prorealtime.com website, depending on your subscription)

Also, the launcher is not affected by the security issues around java : they affect the java plugin in browsers (what is progressively removed by browsers  – not used by PRT)

Now i am a little bit confused. Is there an option to start PRT without the browser? I always login to puredeal (IG’s web platform) and then start from there PRT. Is there a possibility to start PRT directly?

Can hardly imagine how because then one would need login and password directly for PRT but i only have the IG login. Or am i again wrong? 🙂

So, when using the launcher I can remove the java exceptions in my firewall settings? Because those are recommended in the otherwise very helpfull “problems with starting PRT” section of this website.

Is there an option to start PRT without the browser?

No, you always need to log in into your broker account in your browser. The launcher is only here to take care of all Java stuff for you.

when using the launcher I can remove the java exceptions in my firewall settings?

I don’t know but I presume it is still needed, give it a try?
