Hi all, hows ur multitimeframe coding going?
Personally none of my codes performed better with MTF. Not sure why but such is life.

Im trying to create something with multitimeframe and im wondering what u guys have found that works? Either as a filter or trigger?

Ive found good usage of a RSI in daily + RSI in 1h to determine shorter timeframes tops/bottoms with better accuracy then with no MTF. Mean reversion is definitly (at least for me) a lot easier with MTF.

I would definitly think that u can make a kickass filter using something in a higher timeframe. Like macd or trix or simple moving averages.. not sure, havnt found a good filter just yet.

Also wanna leave u guys with a quote from one of the latest episodes of “better system trader” podcast: “The best mean reverting market is the S&P, there is nothing as good as that market when it comes to mean reverting.”

It is interesting that you mention the SP500 and mean reversal as that along with the heavily correlated Dow Jones is where a lot of my recent good performance has come from. If you look at those markets then they look to the naked eye to be trending markets but in fact everyone is buying on the dips and selling when in profit which is the basis of mean reversal. Long term holding will beat mean reversal in the long run but then spread betting and CFD trading is not about using long term holding to make a profit.

As for MTF – so far I have found benefits in looking for extremes in monthly, weekly and daily charts and only entering when all the stars align but obviously the quality of the entry improves and the quantity decreases. So confidence in the results decreases due to the lack of trades and the get rich quick side of my brain dislikes the results. They are most likely superior results but after so much time with out MTF our brains need some re-training.

I originally thought that being able to trade at more beneficially times (lower spreads and getting out just before over night fees were charged) would be a major benefit of MTF but I have in fact proved to myself even more than I thought before that time has no place in trading decisions. In the major indices that I concentrate on a good price is a good price no matter what the time is and no matter what the spread is. Obviously if you trade Mickey Mouse markets then the spread becomes much more important. Also once you start trading at beneficial times on faster time frames then you end up back testing on smaller sets of data which for me is a major draw back. I want to see every sort of market structure in my back testing not just what happened in the last two years.

Vonasi, i agree, with MFE now my head started to spin. All my existing codes had to be checked, full code, parts of code, only entry, only exit, only filters etc. And now that im making codes with the MFE i basicly have to try everything that i have already tried, but now with the MFE spin. Its alot of work and hard to wrap ur head around it sometimes..

Edit: I think that what makes moving averages or indicators using moving averages like trix/macd, bad is the fact that they are always too slow for the entry and too slow for the exit. Well what if your entry is using the 4 hour macd + 1 hour macd and ur exit uses only the 1h macd.

Obviously that would be too easy and i havnt tested it, but the fact that you now can “use” the big daily/ 4h swings, but enter the market and exiting the market on a much smaller timeframe should help alot… Just gotta figure out the correct combo, market, timeframes 😀 Gonna take a while i think hehe
