SINGAPORE, Nov 28 (Reuters) – An outage at exchange operator CME Group (CME.O), opens new tab on Friday halted trade on its popular currency platform and in futures spanning foreign exchange, commodities, Treasuries and stocks.
“Due to a cooling issue at CyrusOne data centres, our markets are currently halted,” CME said in a statement. “Support is working to resolve the issue in the near term and will advise clients of Pre-Open details as soon as they are available.”
CyrusOne, which is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and operates more than 55 data centres in the U.S., Europe and Japan, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The CME notice said the foreign exchange platform EBS markets were also halted due to a technical issue. Traders said they were informed by CME just before 0300 GMT of the halt, which affected trading of all futures and options contracts on Globex.
“It’s a nightmare,” said one trader who declined to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
CME derivatives are benchmarks in markets from stocks to commodities.
It was not clear exactly how many CME products were affected but prices for West Texas Intermediate crude , Treasury futures , S&P 500 futures , palm oil and gold were not updating, according to LSEG Data.
Prices were also not updated on the EBS foreign exchange platform, which is widely used in heavily traded pairs such as euro/dollar and dollar/yen. However, traders said they were able to use other platforms to execute trades.
“It’s been a very slow day here in Asia after the Thanksgiving holiday and this hasn’t helped at all, more so given there is interest to transact at the end of what has been a volatile month,” said Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG.
With the U.S. markets on holiday for Thanksgiving on Thursday and expected to open for a short session on Friday, trading volumes were expected to be low.

I guess above is why US Indices are ‘flat-line’ from about 3am GMT?

I know it was Turkey Day yesterday, and will extend into today, but I expected a bit of movement on US Indices today?

    Without Exchange ?
    Nothing will move.

It looks like the turkeys got stuck in the aircontioners.

But quite serious because it lasts 7 hours by now.

FYI, this is what’s happening today (AMST time). But CME is the one closed anyway.

PS: Turkeys can’t be traded as well. Bummer.

Maybe all the turkey-cooking robbed the data-centres of power for cooling and CPU’s got cooked!

So suppose you have a Future on turkeys. 1000 of them, Long.
Suppose further that today is the expiration of the Turkeys. What will happen ?

Soon a train wagon of turkeys will be dropped in your garden. No garden ? then you balcony.

I think this is devastating, because today is the expiration for certain commodities indeed. Normally at 15:30 Amst, I think. So 3.5 hours to go ?

I can now see movement on DJI from around 11:00 GMT, also on US500 and US100 etc.

Nope. IBKR shows nothing, so IG is fake (as often). But … see below. This is not the Futures market yet, but it is a start.
    Slowly warming up. 🙂

Now it is (since 15 minutes or so).

I have one PRT-IB account “stuck” in something, but that will be the PRT side of things.

On some side note I have the hunch that IG is not really moving along. Volatility shows less than in PRT-IB charts. Or maybe that is filtered/aggregated data I see. Things may run hot otherwise. 🙂

It now appears that all PRT-IB accounts do not update regarding Profit. Only for CME products.
TWS (from IBKR itself) is fine.

And I see now : for *new* trades the price *is* updated.

    Mweh

    It’s a mess.

Prices from trades are updated, only if the trade unwinds (has exited).

OK, then I am a blind trader today. I have heard they exist.
