what indicator works in sideways periodes(consolidation)

  Hi.

   

  What or how do most of you here make staregy to tell the maked is moving sideways?

  I have tried to make this with two moving avragea but cant make it work.

  I was thing about same as boxes that gets drawed on the chart as nicolas have made. If price the last 12houers have been hiting hh and LL 2 times I whabt to start my enter signal.

  Other explination could be bollinger band other lines is both going sideways. (How to program this?

  If the price is continuously playing around (near) its mean, the market is certainly ranging, that’s why Bollinger Bands are accurate to detect ranging market, because the bands are narrowing if the deviation of price is minimal.   If the market keeps contracting it fails to make either new highs or lows. A simple Donchian Channel can do some tricks, with a bit of research.

  Bill Williams Alligator is good also .. when the gator is sleeping the market is ranging … I always smile at refs to the gator, but it makes you remember … not that you need to remember as it is so obvious! 🙂
