I sually leave my machine on with my PRT loaded, but around every 24 hours or so it either closed itself or gives me a message saying it needs to clear temporary files and I need ot restart it.

is there a setting somewhere to change this behaviour?

There is plenty of disk space.

No, PRT automatically closes after 18 hours.

If you think that is bad, you should have been around when it was every 2 hours! 🙁

ahh OK, thanks, thats useful then 😉

So is there any way to stop this, it is so annoying, mid trading it needs to restart – is this a cache issue? memory assignment? why does it need to exit and restart, it is worse than a wednesday Windows update!

    #175488

I switch my platform off each night (when I am sleeping) so I never get the auto-switch off.

Would you doing above not fit in with the way you work?

Alternatively Quit (Save on Quit) when you go to the toilet or make a coffee / lunch and you should never have Autoswitch off issues ever again.

I mean I can, it is just not what I expect. I am in my office all day long, i trade various markets and chart etc, throughout the day, it is just annoying.

it must be a cache/memory related issue and so a fix or setting should be there for it.

I have been in IT for 30+ years and never know any program that just needs to exit after a time just obe restarted unless there was a  problem, not just as matter of usage LOL – does it get tired? 😉

It prevents people from running huge backtest optimizations with lots of parameters over many days, although the benefit of this practice is usually negligible.

I gave up a long time ago trying to work out the machinations of PRT. Maybe it is to do with processes not shutting down fully unless the Platform exits?

I actually shut my Platform a few times per day, notably after a heavy backtesting / optimising session as the Platform ‘hogs RAM’ and after a reboot it works better.

A lot of us got into this way of working when it was an every 2 hour AutoClose … we’d feel like “£!%??@(*&!! if we got closed out after doing several hours coding and we lost it all.

Sounds like when you are in bed be best for you to Close down.

Even if you backtest overnight then it is only 2 or 3 mins to Quit and Log back in before bed, but best to Quit and log back in again in the morning also else the 18 hours AutoQuit may hit you during your days trading!

ok all, thanks for your replies. Will stick a shut down reminder on my phone – craziness 😉

    Thanks

That PRT needs to shut down is completely understandable. Apart from the memory leaks causing it to use more and more memory ;-(, the charts will contain more and more data. Example : if you start out with 10K unit charts and the unit is 1 second, then each day 86400 bars will add “unnoticed”. And with 30+ charts on-screen, this will add up.

    But what PRT Development should think about is that the “18 hour scheme” does not fit anyone (that I can think of);

I am restarting the platforms 2 times per day at least. Not one time. I am like geetrade (and probably may more) – I have PRT open at all times. This means, for example, also when I fall out of bed at any inordinate times. I can not and will not wait for the “several minutes” before all has been fired up finally. And that I use 4 or sometimes 5 PRT instances at the same time … is just a fact.
What do you mean, craziness. 🙁

If PRT would add a lousy 6 hours to their shut down scheme, I would be happy with any procedure I could apply myself. For example, if I deem noon to be a quiet time, I shut down and restart all at ease. Is it 7 in the morning ? fine too. All it requires is me to be there the next day at 7am or else I find myself in front of black screens. So 8 am could be more safe, but will not be convenient because of increasing volatility (starting at ~ 7am).

Throughout the day most moments are inconvenient. Currently always one after the other announces itself for shutdown. It is always interrupting and disturbing.
With 18 hours this one moment never exists. And … during this writing … there we go again … (see attachment). Apparently last time I started this PRT instance was 16:45 yesterday.

Btw with PRT-IB we have 15 minutes to arrange for it (decide for saving settings or not). With PRT-IG situations exist that we have only 2 minutes (promise from a couple of weeks ago : “we will solve that”).

Not sure why I am posting this – anyway I too am annoyed. Day in day out.
