Had been plagued again recently by this issue, happened twice in a row now. Opened PRT, strategies loaded, made a change to one of them and by the time I wanted to execute the change. The Run Backtest button didn’t work. Could still edit code but couldn’t run the backtest or close PRT with the ‘x’. Closed PRT via Task manager and restarted usually this allows me to continue working for at least a couple more hours, but not this time. Exactly the same thing happened twice in a row.

Exactly what I regularly get. I have been working more on my new Premium platform recently and I had that lock up on me yesterday and yet the day before I had three platforms open while I moved stuff about with no problems at all. Five minutes ago I imported a new strategy into my Demo platform, ran a backtest and PRT locked up instantly.

I personally have lost hope of this ever being resolved and suspect it is just a problem with Java on some PC’s – and if that is the case and the majority are all right then nothing will or possibly can be done to resolve it.

I also think there is something about the way RAM is being used by the application as I often get a message telling me I am approaching the limit of available memory.

This is not correct as I usually at that stage still have at least 8GB RAM (which is half) still available.

Yes mine regularly locks up showing it is using 4GB of my 8GB of RAM. There is another discussion on here somewhere regarding the running out of memory message as I was having big problems with the same thing when using the GRAPH function – particularly on short time frame charts .

Well, as I said once before, my PRT never locks up, at least it hasn’t in the past 2 years. My system is Windows 10, 16 GB RAM, Intel core i5 processor, 256 GB SSD.

I used to have problems with memory usage and out of memory messages, until I decided to contact PRT support, and M. Arnaud went through the problem with me for more than a day.

The final message I got and that finally solved my problem was the following :

    Dear Herr Verdi,

I think you have defined a specific option for Java.

Could you please follow this process to delete the Java option ?

    1. Open System in Control Panel.
2.On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables, then click the name of the user variable or system variable you want to change, as follows.
    3. Select “Java_options”
    4. Delete “Java options”

I don’t know if this will help you, but I’m just posting it here FYI.

    Hey an update!

You recall I said I used to have big issues re unresponsive Platforms etc, but for ages I haven’t has issues.

Well over the last few days I have has loads of unresponsive issues again. The only difference I can point to is that over the last few days I have had a Demo Platform open as well as my Live Platform.  Since  Summer 2017 I have hardly used my Demo Platform until the last few days.

Both Platforms run fine together until my internet connection drops. Maybe I am also interacting with the PRT Server at the time the internet connection drops … I’ll try and take note next few times. When the internet connection reconnects then my Platforms start doing weird stuff, slowing, hanging  etc.

I just closed both Demo and Live before the unresponsiveness got too bad to save before Quit … so that is my work around now … get out before total freeze up and Task Manager is then the only way out!

It is the internet connection dropping (not just connection to PRT Server) as I can’t use a browser either etc.

I did suggest in an earlier post that maybe the problem is with the PRT Server in so much as the Server when it comes back up should remember / handshake back at the point it was cut off??  Maybe the two Platforms being  open are confusing the PRT Server??

Anyway Vonasi maybe above is also key to your unresponsive Platform issue as I know you use 4G (often drops??) in the sun sipping g & t’s on your poop deck!!?? 🙂

(btw how is your little ‘poop room’ functioning after your refit?? 🙂 )

    Cheers

I have not had as much time on the PRT platform recently as I would like due to other commitments (the poop room is functioning very well since you ask GraHal – much better once I’d knocked some pesky critter out that was blocking the water inlet seacock – I had a G and T to celebrate!) and strangely I have had no issues with locking up/freezing. I have mainly been using the demo account as I generally have it up and running to monitor running strategies on test. Apart from not being on it so much these days the only other thing that has changed is that I am now on a PRT sponsored IG account which is Premium. It updated the other day but I have not found any changes yet that are of any use to me or that I had suggested! Fingers crossed it continues to work without all the lock ups I was having before.

Update … see my 3 posts in this Thread

So that proves that the PRT L:auncher needs work doing on it  re Hogging

    #64951

I just wanted to run a few backtests (was a long time ago since I did so) and had 3 WFA running at the same time. Now the whole platform froze half way through. :-S I had to close PRT via task manager. Maybe something to do with the recent update?

P.S.: This was on live and not demo.

Yes I agree Despair since the latest update (5 March 18) I found worsening of Platform freezing etc.

In case it wasn’t clear to anybody needing more info / background, I am now using the Java version, but I ended up writing about it in a Thread re the latest version (bit daft of me as it needs to be in this Thread).

I also found yesterday that my PC / Platform works best using the Java PRT version  and the RAM set to 2GB (no slowing / freezing)! I set it to 4GB (as I do have 4GB RAM) yesterday, but it started slowing / freezing etc.

Above findings are on my Live Platform and the rest of my findings are on the Thread link below …

PS  PRT Support … comments appreciated please?

RAM even down to < 0.6 GB (and I’ve done loads backtest / optimise since opening Platform) … never ever seen it that low using the normal Launcher!

    #64957

RAM usage is always lower during the weekends. I noticed this before. I assume because the charts are not updating.

    #64959

    Ah yeah good call Despair!

Earlier today with my RAM set to 4GB on the Java version RAM usage went to > 1.88 GB and I started getting those early signs of a freeze-up!

A screen message had said  that I needed 64 bit Java on my 64 bit windows to make efficient use of 4GB RAM but I thought I’d try anyway! 2GB Ram setting does work better!

Mmm I am running 64 bit Java … weird??

    #64962

BTW When I was still running PRT on my windows PC I also never made it that PRT utilized more than 4GB although there was more installed. Since I switched to my iMAC this increased to 9GB (24GB installed). Just sayin’…
