exitshort versus buy 1 perpoint

Hi, Slightly embarrassed to ask this as it must be something really simple, but in a test system I am struggling to go from a position of say -2 lots to -1.. the backtest goes straight to flat from -2 if i use ‘exitshort’ and it goes to long 1 from -2 if i use ‘buy 1 share’ or ‘buy 1 perpoint’…. is there another command I should be using? The obverse for longs works fine, where I use ‘sell 1 perpoint’.. Thanks for any guidance, R

exitshort 1 lot is the answer got there in the end hope i havent wasted anyone’s time

Not at all and never be afraid to ask … you are among friends here! You may wish to know that partial closures are not allowed by IG on AutoTrading and so your exitshort 1 lot could not be started on ProOrder. ExitShort at Market is good, but ExitShort x lots at Market / Y stop etc is bad and is disallowed.

Thank you! i did not know that re IG. Why on earth can one not scale out of shorts?

We can when manual trading but not when Auto-trading.
Ours is not to reason why, but to do and die! 🙂

I have to say that I find this incredible, that the fantastic suite of tools that comes with an active IG account does not include the ability to scale out of short positions with auto-trader

It’s not the fantastic PRT that won’t allow partial closures … it’s our broker IG!

Yes I had assumed that it was IG. Seems to be nothing PRT won’t tackle… I have raise a help desk query with IG – no joy yet.
